This Day in History: 1929-12-06

06 December 1929

The first run of the Standard Gauge Kerr Stuart 0-6-0 diesel locomotive was made. The machine was obtained in December 1929 to work the standard gauge branch to Murthwaite. The locomotive worked most of the traffic right up to the end of stone traffic in 1953 and was kept in store until 1955 when it was sold to the National Coal Board for use at Wingate Grange Colliery in Durham. It was then sold to the Rom River Co. and is currently preserved on the Foxfield Railway in Staffordshire.
