The Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway Preservation Society

The Society

The R&ER Preservation Society supports the operation of the railway. Our members range from those who want to keep up to date with developments on the railway, to those who give their time to help run the railway. The Society is pledged to support the railway company. It provides financial support and practical help through the volunteer workforce and the running of its locomotives River Mite and Douglas Ferreira.

Keeping in touch

Membership of the Society is a great way to keep in touch with developments on the railway. Members receive four copies of the R&ER Magazine each year, containing news, photos and comment about the railway.

Volunteers

The Railway Company has a small permanent staff. However, the continued operation of the railway also relies on the efforts of volunteers. During the period of daily steam trains, from the end of March to the beginning of November, Society members give invaluable assistance with operating the railway. Volunteers provide most of the guards, assist with preparation of locos and trains, man stations and do many other jobs. In the winter, working parties meet regularly to undertake track work, relaying, reballasting, renewal of fences and telephone equipment. Many members do valuable work in publicising the railway at fetes, rallies and exhibitions in their home areas all over the country. If you have a special skill we would be glad to find you work to suit – otherwise we can give you training.

Supporters

Not all members can give active help, but their support in the form of annual subscriptions and donations helps to fund the Society’s activities. In particular, donations to the River Mite Maintenance Fund are retained in a dedicated account and help keep the Society’s steam engine running. Members are entitled to travel concessions on the R&ER – subject to any restrictions applied by the General Manager – and may use the Society accommodation, Heywood House. If you would like to join us in this venture and make many friends please complete our membership form.
